There are different stages of sleep as 1, 2, 3 and 4, along with REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Some suggest that stages 3 and 4 are one and the same.
As per the National Sleep Foundation, stage 1, the first phase of the sleep is the nimble stage. During this stage, you can easily disturb your sleep, due to external factors such as noise or light falling on the eyes or any other disturbance of the surroundings.
As you go deeper into your sleep, you pass through each stage of the sleep, before reaching the REM stage. In the REM stage, you are so relaxed that all your muscles become motionless as if you are paralyzed and you start dreaming. Suppose the REM stage gets over, you get back to stage 1 sleep. The complete time taken from the start of the first stage to the end of the REM stage is about 90 minutes. Therefore, if you have fully slept for 8 hours, you would have passed through all the stages about 5 times or 5 cycles of sleep stages.
According to Dr.Peters, it is when you pass through stage 1 sleep that you often wake up and find yourself awoke in the middle of the night. But most of the time, the awoken times are too less to even remember what happened during those times. He says that during such times, it is usual to take note of environmental disturbances or adjust the bed covers or roll over. You Struggle To Sleep Again, After Waking Up From Deep Sleep, Which Means, You Suffer From Midnight Insomnia:
Dr. Peter further mentions that if you keep waking up every night and stay so for about 20 to 30 minutes, you might be suffering from midnight insomnia. According to the internal medicine specialist, Nesochi Okeke-Igbokwe, MD informed “Some people awake all the time. Once they get up from their sleep in the middle of the night.” For some, the middle of the night waking or insomnia can cause them to oversleep for the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep for adults.

Dr. Peter says that during such times, it is better not to worry; else, it may become difficult to get back to sleep and make you go tiresome. Dr. Peter suggests that you can also try some things like reading a book, the best sleep partner or listening to music or even trying to solve a puzzle. This will help you go back to sleep when you will not feeling tired enough to get sleep and you seem to be running out of time to get that chunk of sleep time. Note to put on the lights dimmer, to help you keep up with your Circadian Rhythm.
Dr. Okeke-Igbokwe suggests that often resorting to the above-mentioned methods needs your attention to analyze your sleep practice. Your analysis should concern your sleeping environment (like the bedroom being a dark room, quieter and cooler), sleeping time, the time you go to bed, the time you have your last cup of coffee, your interest to watch the TV, etc. If you find that none of these but your stress or anxiety is cause for concern, discuss with your doctor to get the much-needed help.
If you are Waking Up Often, To Urinate, You Need To Restrict Your Fluid Intake Just Before Going To Bed Or Evaluate Existence Of Any Medical Condition.
Urinating often in the nights may just be fine if it is due to consuming water before hitting the bed or taking alcohol drinks before bedtime or taking medication consisting of a diuretic like the BP drug. If that is the case, better to avoid all such things before going to bed.
Apart from the above causes, one more important aspect is the UTI or the Urinary Tract Infection. UTI results in an overactive bladder which makes you urinate often.

Sleep apnoea is a cause for concern. It can lead to daytime sleepiness. Excessive sleepiness during the daytime may not link to waking up many or a few times during the night. The airways, in combating the inflammation, swell up and may make you cough rigorously enough to wake you up from your sleep. If not for the cortisol, the presence of dust mites or any other allergens can bring about asthma. Thus, asthma can also lead to sleeplessness during the night and make you feel sleepy during the daytime.

Dr. Okeke-Igbokwe rightly points out that one should be watchful against the drowsiness during the day while also taking into account, the number of times you wake up during the nights and the time-period you stay awake once you get up.
So don’t take it for granted that tiredness is normal during the day time, but see the doctor get rid of the actual cause. Also, while it is fine for someone to wake up as many times during the night, others may find it dreadful to get up often while asleep.
