Any reason why ground flaxseed has to be refrigerated?

Any reason why ground flaxseed has to be refrigerated? Secondly the package recommends 2-3 tablespoons but Dr. Greger recommends 1 tablespoon. Why the discrepancy?

Ground flax can go rancid quickly so best to freeze or refrigerate. I freeze whole flax and grind it as I need it.

The package would like you to use as much as possible. Dr Greger says it can be unrefrigerated for up to about a year after its ground. I keep mine in the fridge anyway.

The whole seeds no not require refrigeration. I store them in the cupboard in a glass container and grind it as I use it. I have a coffee grinder dedicated to it. 1-3 T per day. I wouldn’t ever buy pre ground because you never know how long ago it was ground.
