I think most people are powerbuilding and don’t realize it. Dedicated powerlifters are probably just powerlifting. Some competitive bodybuilders, particularly those in the physique category (not classic) are probably just bodybuilding. Classic physique and bodybuilding are most likely powerbuilding. Most guys lifting in the gym following a routine they got online are most likely powerbuilding as well.
I do powerbuilding.. the way I describe it is I focus mainly on the three big lifts, always logging them and doing anywhere from 5-8 sets. 3 warmup, 3-4 working sets. Anything else I do will be either assistance work or bodybuilding style lifts mainly just for fun and which I do not log. A typical day might look like: bench press. Then bench variations, then sculpting/light work – think pec flys, tricep kickbacks, shoulder raises..etc. For me PB means powerlifting focused, bodybuilding secondary and just for fun.
