Does anyone know about this book’ Clean Meat ‘. Forgive me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that the authors are suggesting a move towards meat grown from a test tube or similar – is that right? Is our Dr supporting this? Is this WFPB?
You’re correct. We just had a post on this that Richard closed as it is outside the scope of the group. He is being pragmatic I suppose, but no it is not plant based- it’s extremely processed too. He’s not suggesting plant eaters consume it, just to be clear!
I believe with “food safety risks” he is referring to the contamination of meat with bacteria, viruses, prions, medication residues etc. that are promoted by factory farming practices and are likely to be much less of a problem with lab grown meat. After all so sorts of public health threats are also a research focus of Dr. G.
It’s not so much a “green light” as it is a better choice for people who are unwilling to give up meat. Better choice in that animals aren’t tortured and the animal agriculture won’t be polluting and contaminating the environment we all share. But it’s still meat and comes with all the problems that ingesting animal protein and fat entails.
If we’re in this to eat as natural and healthy as possible, why would I want to eat test tube meat? No animal was designed to eat the same exact clone of food over and over again – which is what this is going to be. I don’t trust scientists to make “perfect” food – nothing on this earth is perfect so it must not be necessary for life. In fact, it’s an argument against it. Even if Dr. Greger supports it, I will choose not to eat it any more than I do artichokes.
