Has anyone had long term success on a Ketogenic diet whilst being treated for Hypothyroidism? Been doing some research which says that insulin is needed to convert T4 to T3 so a Ketogenic diet not advised. My hypothyroidism was induced due to radioactive iodine treatment for Graves’ Disease. I’m currently on 150mcg thyroxine and blood results come back normal however still experience some side effects of hypothyroidism. I’m reasonably fit but trying to lose some weight and improve fitness and overall health.
I am hypothyroid and doing fine on this WOE, actually my meds are working better. I will say if you haven’t already found the Stop the Thyroid Madness website and/or book, you might want to check out why T4 only meds may not be your best choice in the long run.
This WOE does not do away with insulin, it just helps you to need less, and lower insulin resistance so that you don’t need as much. We can’t survive without insulin, so I am really puzzled by what you found about this diet not letting you convert T4 to T3. I believe that person may not really understand how the WOE works metabolically.
I have hypothyroidism as well and I have only been doing keto WOE for 5 days and I can finally drop weight!! Every other WOE I’ve tried (and there have been MANY) none of them worked! And the bonus? I actually have more energy than I have had for a very long time!!
I have no thyroid due to cancer. That’s as hypo as you can get lol. I have been keto for over 2 years. My endo actually suggested keto as a way that she had seen some of her other patients successfully lose weight while hypo. She tested me after every 20 lb loss (I have lost 77 lbs) and adjusted my meds accordingly. Dr ken berry has some excellent YouTube videos discussing keto and hypothyroidism.
