How to approach the keto issue when doing something like a half marathon.

I ran a half marathon yesterday. I was afraid I would not finish, so I ate some carbs – a CLIF bar and a shot of CLIF goo. I felt fine and finished the race, but I ended up gaining a couple of pounds this morning. I figured I had burned off the carbs but is it possible that it through me out of ketosis and messed me up? I have gone almost no carb today so I am hoping to reverse the effects, but wondering how to approach the keto issue when doing something like a half marathon.

There’s a difference between “gaining weight” and gaining fat. You can gain weight by eating drinking etc. drink a 16 oz glass of water and you will now weigh 1 lb more. Does that mean you gained 1 lb of fat? Of course not. The scale lies in terms of how much fat you are gaining or Losing. Those daily 4 lb -5 lb fluctuations are normal.

Muscles tear during good workouts and fill with water. It’s all part of the repair process. I always gain weight after long runs or bike rides. You’re good. Just leave the clif products for the carb loaders. They need them to finish. You don’t.

You can’t really gain pounds of fat in a few hours eating a cliff bar and some goo. It’s water weight or inflammation.

I notice after a long lifting session I’ll be a little heavier the next morning. I think it’s just like everyone said in muscles retaining water.

How long have you been keto first (did you start to soon to the event to fully fat adapt?). If you’re fully fat adapted then you should’ve had faith and run carrying fat based fuels – coconut oil/mct oil sachets, pickles , almond butter sachets, cooked bacon etc…. i personally run a half on just supplied water and many others do too along with salt ( I only add salt on a full marathon distance). Remember you’re aspiring to run fat adapted so no need for carbs to get you around.
