I haven’t started exercising yet. I have been losing without and I’ve read a couple of times that you need to be able to take in at least 1200 calories…. is there any truth to this? I definitely want to exercise but I don’t want to put myself into “starvation mode”. Help Should I just start?

My surgeon never said I had to eat a certain number of calories to exercise. My nut has advised me to get my protein in with out eating more than 1/3 cup of food and to stay away from carb heavy foods. Obviously no junk food but neither of them put a minimum on calories. I try to hit the gym 4-5 days a week but I know I’m not getting more than 700 calories a day.

I was told to start exercising as soon as I could. I started with walking at 6 weeks post-op. (my recovery was abnormally long.) 20 minutes of walking was where I started. Gradually adding time and increasing speed. Then jogging, then running. I was never told to be at a specific caloric intake before exercising. Every doc says different things. I say exercise. If you’re worried you can always put a call into your surgeon.

You will start out with much less after WLS, but you slowly build up to 4-6 oz of food per meal which can take months. They are most concerned about protein & water intake by volumn.

Start as soon as you can, develops a healthy routine that works with your life. 3 to 4 times a week. Come year 3 or 4 it will really will payoff do not go overboard. Track exercise, water and food intake and listen to your body.

I think it’s best to go by the advice of your own surgeon as much as possible since everyone has things specific to your own health history
