I don’t think so I have a first gen and my friend just got the x and in 20in of ice he can cut about 2 seconds faster.

The motor is the same. The battery only has a higher capacity, meaning it can cut longer, not faster. The flighting is improved in the sense that the cast bottom perfects the blade angle vs the welded ring bottom.

Lots of people complained last year about the cast end of the ion x drill freezing up with slush. I have heard they were working on a different coating to improve this. I am on year 3 with the normal ion with reverse and zero issues or complaints.

I bought the Ion second year out no problems with it just upgraded to the x. It does start cutting quicker due to the center point other than that same thing just bigger AH battery. I got mine for $500 at Duluth sport show. I also drilled 88 almost got through the 89th on a single charge with the X in 18″ of ice.

Second year with ion x 8″. No issues. I am not a looking for speed, but was drilling faster than a guy with the 6″ k drill. Both great for hole hopping. Drills more holes than I ever need.
