Water is usually enough to rehydrate, unless you’re exercising really hard or for a long time. Athletes tend to replace only about half of the fluid lost when they drink water. Sports drinks may replace more lost fluids because athletes enjoy the taste.

Drinks containing some carbohydrate in the form of sugars and electrolytes, usually sodium, can be absorbed by the body more quickly than pure water and therefore allow rehydration to happen more rapidly.

Most healthy people can stay well hydrated by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. For some people, fewer than 8 glasses may be enough. Other people may need more than 8 glasses each day.
