I've been having some swelling in my feet and ankles the past week

I’ve been having some swelling in my feet and ankles the past week or so and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced water retention on keto or has any advice? I’m drinking lots of water and using an electrolytes replacement and salting my food. Not sure if it’s a case of too much salt, not enough or something just out of balance. I’ve been strict keto for 6 weeks and I’m training for a marathon so I’m either running or during cross training almost every day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you supplementing salt?? I tend to feel that happens to me when I need more…

How’s your breathing been? Short of breath? The swelling, when you use 2 fingers and push down on it, do you have a “dent”? If yes to any of these please see a Dr right away and stop supplementing with salt for the time being. You may have too much salt and are retaining fluid. Any type of water retention like that could be heart or venous related. So nothing to take too lightly, as it could lead to further complications.

You should probably see/ask a Dr.

I had ankle swelling a bit for awhile actually and I didn’t ever figure out exactly what was going on. I can tell you though I have slowly increased my sodium consumption as I realized I really needed to have it way higher than I had believed! I have around 5g per day now. I don’t see the swelling anymore!

On keto if you don’t have enough salt, and your drinking too much water, you’re gonna retain. Up sodium, make sure your getting 5k to 6500mg of sodium and you’re gonna be good, the more water you drink the more you’re gonna need sodium.
