I’ve been in hospital for the last 3 days with a nasty infection in my leg. Hopefully going home today. I have been pumped full of antibiotics and am wondering what I should eat etc when I get home to get my good bacteria back. I think I’ve read somewhere Dr Greger saying to have prebiotics rather than probiotic to feed the good bacteria already in our system. Is that right? Now that I probably have no bacteria in my system should I be having probiotics? Any advice on this and the best food to get in as soon as I leave this place would be appreciated.

Lots of fibre rich foods and probiotic foods or probiotcs.

Insoluble fibre from soft fruits will be your best friend! I used a lot of bananas, and the soluble fibre in them turns to butyrate which is excellent for rebuilding healthy gut flora. I used this approach, while staying away from all insoluble fibre containing foods for a few months while rebuilding my gut from crohns disease.

Yogurts aren’t really a great source since not much survives beyond the stomach. Coconut yogurt, in particular, should be avoided due to the saturated fat content.
