My question is, what else would you suggest to get? I would like to use sand instead of pebbles, does Petco have a safe sand option for betta tanks? Also what food do you recommend that is on the affordable side?

Hello, I’m new here and new to being a betta fish owner. A family member bought my son a blue male veil tail with only a half gallon tank. We are going to the pet store in the next few days (after we get paid) to get all of the proper stuff to give our betta a good life. We are already planning to get a 5 gallon tank, heater, filter, food and water conditioner. My question is, what else would you suggest to get? I would like to use sand instead of pebbles, does Petco have a safe sand option for betta tanks? Also what food do you recommend that is on the affordable side?

I’d get Prime for conditioner and grab an API freshwater test kit (or start saving up for one asap).

In terms of substrate, id say if its Aquarium sand then it should be fine , i do recommend the natgeo one or the caribsea super natural sands, i have the black one in my 3 gal for my boy hades and its absolutely beautiful! Im not familiar with petco but i believe they have the two sands that ive mentioned ! ^-^ also im happy that you guys are perfectly fine with getting the needed supplies for him to be happy and healthy !!

Another thing you can do is get pool filter sand from a hardware store. It is inert quartz and super cheap!
