Needs carbs to get through the workout

My brother-in-law (who likes to lift) started keto, but said it makes him too weak. He feels light-headed and weak at the gym so he thinks that he needs carbs to get through the workout. I know everyone is different, but i feel like the people of THIS KA group don’t feel that way. What advice should I give him? I know that he needs to get the electrolytes way up. What else?

Electrolytes. Absolutely. Also if he’s approaching this with a “diet” mentality he may need more food. Also, often people are afraid to eat fat. He needs fat for fuel. Additionally, there is a transition period and it’s not uncommon for performance to suffer during it. I’d highly recommend the Art and Science of Low Carb performance to him. It will explain the science behind this way of eating.

People believe the switch is instant, but during transition you will have energy loss. Unfortunately there is no quick fix, and we’ve all been there.

He was transitioning and during that phase its normal for strength and endurance to take a hit ( how would he expect his car to run if he put a different fuel in it??). Becoming fat adapted is a process that can take typically 12 weeks – during that time we say listen to your body. De load weights/do less/stretch more…… and ensure electrolytes and macros are on point. Once he got through this phase he would’ve been golden. Lifting heavier than ever and probably without the need for food either.

He’s not adapted. You can’t just start keto and be bast in the gym. It doesn’t work that way.

I had a long battle to just starting to feel the same at the gym. It takes time and playing with your macros.
