So, I have this tank I left my cat around unattended for a few days and it has old live sand in it and he used it as a litter box. If cleaned thoroughly would the tank be safe to use or just toss it? Money is a factor, so is it salvageable? Would be for SW if that matters?

Make a bleach-water solution (cold water works fine with bleach) and scrub the hell out of it, then rinse the hell out of it with hot water. When you think you’ve rinsed it enough, rinse it a few more times. Very, very thoroughly. That should do the trick. If you want to be extra-extra sure, get some straight razor blades, some aquarium silicone glue, and remove the current glue with the blades and re-do the glue to get any cat ammonia out that way.

Just give the sand a good rinse in bleach and water. It’ll be fine. Clean out the tank with bleach as well, rinse well and let air dry.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be too worried. I’d rinse it well with RO water and use it. It’s just pee. Not some deadly chemical.
