When using tip ups for northern what’s your preference, sucker minnow couple feet below the ice or just off the bottom?
Set up with half suckers and half shiners to see what they want to eat that day. Usually couple feet off bottom.
Foot from bottom.
Smelt. Various depths.
4 feet off bottom with live minnow on bottom with dead bait.
2 feet under the ice and a foot off the bottom. And I like shiners on my tip ups.
It depends on water depth, clarity, and structure but 90% of the time 1 foot off bottom with sucker or shiner but fun dogs work good 3 to 4 feet under the ice with a plain hook.
3ft under the ice or 1 ft above the tops of the weeds.
I like to use 2-3 crappie minnows on a treble, and in the bottom 1/3rd of the water column. Saves me money on expensive suckers when I already got a scoop of crappie ones.
1-4 off bottom for pike and walleye.
