What do you do to prepare your gear, vehicle, and other things BEFORE the hunt? I have spent considerable time planning months in advance having most things ready to go but I want to hear what YOU do to get some ideas.

Yes, use your gear so you really know what you “want” and “need”. Keep that weight down.

One thing I do is fix meals that I can freeze so that when I get back to camp I can just heat them up, eat, and hit the sack so I can get up early the next morning. I try to minimize as much as possible anything that keeps me in camp doing “chores”. I have even brought firewood with me for my woodstove, or I get there several days in advance cutting and splitting wood for camp so it doesn’t need to be done during the open season. I like a nice camp with a cavas tent and wood stove, but I try to organize things so I am out hunting all day and I only enjoy camp once the animals are hanging.

Things I do are , check the weather, double check the game regulations, prepare to have time to sight your weapon at altitude, make sure the backup weapon is functioning properly ,take out the batteries of everything that uses batteries and check for corrosion, get extra batteries for everything….look at the maps and make photos to carry instead of the real map….make sure my vehicle is ready for a road trip, including if needed, oil change, spare tire properly inflated and the jack is all there and working…make sure to have extra keys for vehicle, tire locks and gun case…check that my knives are sharp…bring game bags and make sure that everything you can buy now is ready to go..Nothing worse than getting somewhere and can’t get what you need, or if you can find it, that’s it’s not twice what you can usually get it for…bring a fishing pole in case you have free time. Last, make sure you have enough medication for twice what your expected hunt is for…

I use my gear year round so that it’s dialed by time season comes around. Same with body and mind.
